Definition
the class of AI models that emulate the structure and characteristics of input data in order to generate derived synthetic content
Quoted definition: NIST Computer Security Resource Center, Generative artificial intelligence glossary, glossary entry, definition attributed to NIST SP 800-218A.
Notes to entry
Note 1 to entry: NIST gives images, video, audio, text and other digital content as examples. The definition describes a model class. A generative AI system also includes the application and other components through which people use a model.
Note 2 to entry: In AidGPT's Session 1 example, asking for a one-page summary delegates choices about relevance, omission, qualifications and organisation. The generated response can be fluent while still omitting evidence or making an unsupported claim. A person sets the brief and checks the result before relying on it.
Note 3 to entry: Generative AI is a type of AI, not a synonym for all AI. The course contrasts its open-ended response with rule-based automation. Other AI methods can also classify, predict or recommend, and a system may combine methods.
